Carlos Alcaraz v Tommy Paul Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Alcaraz and Paul before this.

Alcaraz Resumes Hard Court Action

After his fourth round exit at Wimbled, Alcaraz went back to his favourite surface – clay – and featured in two tournaments on it. And both, he made it to the final, only to go down in three fighting sets.

At Hamburg, Alcaraz lost to Lorenzo Musetti while in Umag he lost the title-deciding match to Jannik Sinner.

And he now resumes hard court action as he takes to court for this second round following an opening round bye. Earlier in the season, Alcaraz had featured in three hard court competitions and accumulated a 12-2 win-loss record there.

That included a semifinal appearance at the Indian Wells Masters and a title win in Miami.

Can he go the distance here in the Canadian Open this season?

Paul Tames Pospisil

Vasek Pospisil, a former world number 25, has been featuring on the Challenger circuit in more recent times and was awarded a wildcard to feature in this home competition of his. Paul did not offer any such favours though as he came through against the Canadian in straight sets to set up a second round meeting with Alcaraz.

The American was on court for an hour and 26 minutes in his 6-4, 6-4 win over Pospisil, in which he broke his opponent once apiece in each of the two sets.

And he faced three break-points in the process but saved all of them to come through in what turned out to be a clinical display of tennis.

This win follows back to back defeats for Paul after having lost to Ilya Ivashka in the Atlanta Open quarterfinal and then going down to Nick Kyrgios in Washington.

Can he get the better of in-form Alcaraz?
