Garbine Muguruza v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head
It’s 1-1 from their previous meetings. Muguruza won at the Australian Open in 2014, while Kanepi won at Roland Garros this year.

It’s Been a Frustrating Season for Muguruza
It has been a disappointing season for World No. 8 Garbine Muguruza. There were high expectations from the Spaniard following a stunning 42-17 season last year, which culminated with the WTA Finals title.
However, Muguruza just couldn’t get going this year. She has won consecutive matches just once in 12 tournaments this season. That happened in Qatar, where she lost in the quarterfinals. She also made the last eight in Sydney, but she needed to win just one match in that tournament after receiving a first round bye.
The two-time Grand Slam champion last played in Wimbledon this year, making a first round exit after falling to Greet Minnen. She was supposed to play in San Jose last week, but had to pull out before the start of the tournament due to an injury.
Can Muguruza fin form in Toronto? She will be desperate to start well, but neither her form nor her past record in the tournament are encouraging. The 10-time tour-level champion made the quarterfinals in 2017 but lost in the second round on the other three occasions, including last year. Can she go past the Round of 32 this year?

Kanepi Advances As Osaka Retires
Last week’s Washington Open finalist Kaia Kanepi made it to the second round of the Canadian Open after her opening round match against Naomi Osaka had a premature ending with the Japanese player retiring in the second set.
The 37-year-old Estonian has now won five of her last six matches. On Tuesday, the World no. 31 went up a break twice in the first set, but the former no. 1 got the break back on both the occasions to force the tiebreak.
Kanepi edged out Osaka in the tiebreak to go one-set up. She raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Osaka unfortunately retired with a back injury.
Kanepi is playing in the tournament after a gap of 12 years. The opening round win improved her season record to 25-12.
The four-time tour-level champion, who was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open this year. She will be hoping to carry her solid form into the second round.
Muguruza v Kanepi Prediction and Tip
Kanepi is in terrific form, while Muguruza has not only struggled this season but is also coming off an injury. While the Spaniard is the seeded player the Estonian will fancy her chances against her. Expect Kanepi to edge out Muguruza and advance to the next round.
