Ruud Outlasts Bautista Agut

Casper Ruud needed three hours and 19 minutes to complete a come-from-behind win over 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut and advance to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open for the second time in a row.

Both Ruud and Bautista Agut traded a break each in the first and second sets. But it was the Spaniard who dominated the tiebreak in the first and Ruud in the second to take the match into the final set. Ruud got the decisive break in the fifth game of the third and then missed out on three match points on Bautista Agut’s serve at 5-3. He eventually converted the one in teh very next game for a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory.

Ruud has been in outstanding form this season and Thursday’s win was the sixth consecutive win for the French open runner-up. In his last tournament he had won four matches in a row to take the Gstaad Open title. He carried that clay court form to the hard court in Montreal and began his campaign with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Alex Molcan in the second round.

The two wins have improved Ruud’s season record to 37-13. He has already won three titles, including the ones in Buenos Aires and Genva in addition to the win in Gstaad. He was also a finalist in Miami this season, going down to Carlos Alcaraz.

On his Canadian Open debut last year, the Norwegian faltered at the last eight stage, going down to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Can he make the semifinals this year?

Auger-Aliassime Routs Norrie

World No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime struck 15 aces in a dominant Round of 16 performance to knock out ninth seed Cameron Norrie and get a quick revenge over the Briton.

The Canadian was beaten by Norrie in three sets in the Los Cabos semifinal last week. However, the lefty stood no chance on Thursday as the Canadian dictated terms from start to finish.

Auger-Aliassime didn’t face a single break point in the match, while he broke Norrie once in each set for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the World No. 11.

The win over Los Cabos runner-up in the Round of 16 followed a straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka, who too, was a finalist last week, finishing runner-up to Nick Kyrgios in Washington. Just like Thursday’s contest, his opponent didn’t hit a single ace in the match, while he struck 17 on his way to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory.

The 22-year-old Canadian, who was 3-3 in Montreal before this season, will be featuring in a first quarterfinal at the ATP 1000 event.

He is 34-18 in a season, where he won his first-ever ATP title by beating Tsitsipas in the Rotterdam final. Can he keep his impressive run going at home and reach a fifth semifinal of the season?
