Hurkacz Survives a Scare
Hubert Hurkacz rebounded after dropping the first set and then saved a match point in the 10th game of the third before finally winning the deciding set tiebreak to oust Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas and advance into the next round.
Hurkacz out-aced the Spaniard 23-1. The Polish player struck a total of 58 winners to Ramos-Vinolas’ 23, but also made 20 more unforced errors than the Spaniard’s 19.
Winning 77% points on the back of his first delivery, the World No. 10 also saved three of five break points. He had a 100% conversion rate of break points, breaking the World No. 43 on all four occasions.
Hurkacz had also needed three sets to beat Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round on Wednesday. The eighth seed, who won in two hours and 26 minutes on Thursday, had beaten Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes.
The 25-year-old, who won this year’s Halle Open title — his fifth ATP success — was a quarterfinalist in Montreal last year as well, but he couldn’t make it to the semifinals. Can he go that far with a win on Friday?

Kyrgios’ Extraordinary Form Continues
Red hot Nick Kyrgios continued to dazzle at the Canadian Masters, picking up his third straight win and extending his overall win streak to nine matches.
The Australian, who made it to his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, has lost just the final of the grass court major since the beginning of the season’s third major.
Kyrgios had won the Washington Open for the second time last week and has brought that winning form to Canada.
After starting off with a straight forward 6-4, 6-4 win over Sebastian Baez in the first round, he went on to beat World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the second round. The 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2 victory over the top seed was just his second win over a current World No. 1. His first came at Wimbledon in 2014, when he beat Rafael Nadal to reach the quarterfinals.
The win over the Russian in the second round was followed by a relatively easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over compatriot Alex de Minaur. Kyrgios struck 25 winners, including eight aces, and converted 6 of 10 break points while saving to save either of the two that he faced. But that didn’t affect the overall outlook of the match, as Kyrgios won in just 63 minutes.
Playing his 10th tournament of the year, Kyrgios is 30-7 and on Friday will be playing for a spot in the semifinals for the sixth time this year.
Hurkacz v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip
Kyrgios is in unbelievable form at the moment and he is the favourite to keep the winning run going. Expect Hurkacz to put up a fight, but Kyrgios to get his Halle Open revenge.
