Victoria Azarenka v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players at the WTA level and Azarenka has won them both. Interestingly, both came way back in 2009!
They had also faced off in the Billie Jean King Cup that season and Kanepi had clinched that encounter.

Azarenka had made a solid start to the Washington Open in which she participated after having missed the entire grass court swing earlier in the months of June and July.
She sent both, Dayana Yastremska and Tereza Martincova out in straight sets to reach the last eight stage.
Unfortunately for the Belarusian player, a shock loss at the hands of Xiyu Wang despite going in as a 1/4 favourite is something she would need to work on. The world number 20 won just four games in that encounter.
What Azarenka will hope for is to start off a positive note but she is coming up against a player who has improved from a season-low of 115th in the world to her current 31st. Might not be an easy one.

Kanepi 14-6 in Hard Court Tournaments This Season
Kanepi last won a title on the WTA circuit in 2013, but in Washington earlier this month she came close to adding one to it.
In fact after reaching the final of that tournament and winning the first set having gone into the title-decider as a 3/5 favourite against Ludmilla Samsonova, Kanepi would have considered the job more than half done.
Unfortunately for her, she wasn’t able to complete the victory as she fell to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat to her Russian opponent.
A second round loss at Toronto followed soon after as Kanepi went down to Garbine Muguruza but despite that, she enters this tournament on the back of 14 wins from 20 matches in hard court competitions.

This could turn out to be a tough contest that goes down to the third set. Hard to pick a winner here but the chances of a three-setter are high.
