Sofia Kenin v Shelby Rogers Head to Head
No previous matches have been played between these two at the highest level. They have met twice on the ITF circuit though and it’s 1-1 with both matches having come in clay court competitions played in 2016.

Since reaching the quarterfinal at the Adelaide International earlier this season, Kenin hasn’t won a single match on the women’s circuit this year.
Fitness has obviously played a part with Kenin out of action for five months before returning in the USA earlier in August. And since her return too, Kenin has struggled to get going again.
In the two matches she has played, the former Australian Open winner has both – defeats to Maria Osorio Serrano in Washington and Sloane Stephens in Toronto making life difficult for the American.
Kenin now kick-starts another tournament knowing very well she has a stiff opponent opposite her and it will take something for her to get going.

San Jose Finalist Rogers Returns
After making it as far as the final of the San Jose Open, Rogers had opted out of the Rogers Cup last week but she now returns to action with her opening round match here in Cincinnati.
And Rogers will hope she can do better than most times she has at this competition, having featured in four editions and won just a single main draw match. The other three times Rogers hadn’t even made it past the qualifiers.
Now ranked at her career-best 30th in the world, Rogers has a good chance of improving on her poor Cincinnati record but she has a former Grand Slam winner up against her.
With Rogers having crashed out in the first round in three of the hard court competitions she has played in this season, it would be interesting to see which side of the fence her performance falls in this competition.

While Rogers is a favourite here, Kenin had shown against Stephens she is finding her way back to form and one can expect her to get going at some point. Going with a Kenin surprise.
