Andy Murray v Stan Wawrinka
Due to some pullouts, Andy Murray avoided playing the qualifiers in Cincinnati and moved into the main draw of the event where he will face Wawrinka. The Swiss veteran hasn’t been playing that great and he’s burning his protected ranking to enter events.
They’ve played plenty of times over the years with Murray leading 13-9 and the Brit would like to make it 14 wins against Wawrinka. The last time they played at the French Open was a shocking defeat for Murray and he certainly remembers it.
Wawrinka is far from that level as the Swiss is trying to work his way to something resembling the old Stan.
It’s been tough as his last week came over Tiafoe at Queen’s Club. Since then it’s been a couple of defeats with Emil Ruusuvuori being better in Montreal. It’s not been better for Murray who has lost a couple of matches in a row as well. Montreal was a quick loss to Taylor Fritz in round one and generally, the Brit can’t be satisfied so close to the US Open.
He’s not losing hope though and still believes n himself and I think that might be enough. Could go three but expect Murray to finally win a match.

Leylah Fernandez v Ekaterina Alexandrova
Leylah Fernandez made a winning return last week in Toronto which was good to see but it also demonstrated that she’s far off from her best. It’s only natural so she’ll hope a couple of wins here will get her in peak form ahead of the US Open but Alexandrova will be tough out.
The Russian has played rather well on hard courts before and she has the game for it but it’s not been that great this year with a 3-5 record. Her last event was Berlin a long time ago so she’s certainly rusty in this one Fernandez won’t get many matchups where she’s in better rhythm than her opponent so this is a great opportunity for her.
That is a crucial thing because she’s got two matches under her belt last week and some doubles as well while Alexandrova is coming off a two-month pause and not only that. She’s also coming from grass which will take some adjusting as well.
All of that bodes well for Fernandez who will the favourite and she should win. Perhaps even in straight sets.
Tip: Fernandez to win: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Daria Kasatkina v Amanda Anisimova
Daria Kasatkina will take on Amanda Anisimova in a premier matchup in round one in Cincinnati and it’s going to be a fascinating match. The Russian captured the San Jose trophy but bombed in Toronto against Anderescu in two sets. It’s not a huge surprise as keeping a high level on such a short turnaround is tricky and there was plenty of fatigue in play as well.
Anisimova had a short stay in Toronto as well. She won her round one matchup but completely fell apart against Pliskvoa in round two despite beating the Czech the week prior. One of the hardest hitters on the tour, Anisimova is a very inconsistent in her level. She can play amazing one week but terrible the other week.
It’s unclear whether she’ll turn it around this week but there are some positive signs she might. First of all, she’ll be back in the US, 2nd one is that she’ll face a player she’s beaten twice before. Amanda holds a 2-0 H2H over Kasatkina and one came this year as well (6-2 6-0).
The American has a clear advantage in rallies when she’s playing in rhythm however Kasatkina will battle and not allow her to cruise that easily. Really tough to call as it will come down to Anisimova but I expect a pretty tough battle that will be decided in three sets.
Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
