Ekaterina Alexandrova v Shuai Zhang Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Alexandrova leads the head to head 2-1. In hard court competitions, the scores are tied at one win apiece.
Alexandrova had won their most recent meeting in Stuttgart on clay in two tie-breakers.

In a match lasting a mere hour and 20 minutes, Alexandrova was able to send the world number 14 Leylah Fernandez out and seal her second round berth.
Featuring in her first match in two months, Alexandrova showed very little signs of rust as he galloped past her opponent, winning 6-4, 7-5.
Both players struggled with their serves, with the Russian herself dropping her own serve four times while breaking the Canadian on six occasions.
What Alexandrova would be terribly proud of is the manner of her fightback – she was 1-5 down in the second set and came back to win six games in a row consisting of three successive breaks. She lost just four points in those three games.
Alexandrova will now hope to pip past an opponent who herself is coming off a confidence-boosting victory.

Zhang Shocks Osaka
Naomi Osaka has had his fitness concerns in recent times but had still gone into her opening round match against Zhang as a 1/3 favourite against her Chinese opponent. What happened in the end sounded like the bookmakers had gotten their odds interchanged.
Because in a short matter of an hour and 15 minutes, Zhang had sent Osaka out and sealed her place in the second round. Zhang won 6-4, 7-5.
Despite serving 10 aces in the encounter, Osaka dropped her serve thrice while managing just one break of her own, which is due credit to the manner in which Zhang defended.
The difference between the two players was their second serves – Osaka got only 53% of her first serves in while Zhang was at a whopping 85% but more vitally, Zhang then won seven of her nine second serve points too. Osaka’s second serve numbers were a rather poor 37%.
How much of that can Zhang reproduce in this encounter remains to be seen because that is where things could change.

This could turn out to be an intriguing battle which either lasts the distance or has two rather long sets.
