Tsitsipas hasn’t had the best of times at the US Open. In fact, some of his worst performances have come at the US Open with the world number five having never even reached the fourth round of this competition.
The good news for the Greek number one on the men’s circuit is he had never made it to the final of the Cincinnati Masters either before this season. And he did that this year last week, beating the world number one Daniil Medvedev en route his finals loss at the hands of Borna Coric.
That should give Tsitsipas some more confidence coming into this opening round encounter at the US Open.
What might also help is the dearth of pressure on Tsitsipas. With his performances this year having been steady without being dazzling, Tsitsipas has won just two titles this year, and none on hard court surfaces.
Which is why he enters this tournament without that expectation on his shoulder despite that strong showing in Cincinnati. Could go on to help him a long way.

Galan Eases Through the Qualifiers
Hard court tennis isn’t quite Galan’s cup of coffee and that can be exemplified from the fact that when most other players were prepping for the US Open with some hard court practice in the tournaments in the US, Galan was taking part in clay court competitions on the Challenger circuit.
In fact since making it to the third round at Wimbledon – a surprise result aided by Roberto Bautista-Agut’s injury – Galan has played on only clay.
There have been ATP tournaments and Challengers in which he has done well but it wasn’t till Galan got to the qualifiers of the US Open that he took part on hard courts.
Which is why it makes for an impressive showing from Galan, to win all his three qualifiers here in three sets.
Against Tsitsipas though, all of those impressive tennis could well come to nothing and quickly at that.
