Having lost four matches in a row including two in hard court competitions, there would have been obvious nervousness for Bondar despite facing a virtual greenhorn in her opener here.
In the end, Bondar displayed a solid game and came through in straight sets to reach round two of the competition. She won 6-3, 6-4 against the 17-year-old Kayla Cross in a match lasting an hour and 18 minutes.
Bondar did lose her serve in the fifth game of the opening set but retaliated by breaking back twice and clinching the opener.
This pattern followed in the second set as well, when she fell 1-3 behind only to break back twice in a row before winning the match.
Incidentally, this was Bondar’s first win in a completed outdoor hard court match this season since January where she had won her opener in the Melbourne Summer Set 1.

Maria Surprises Podoroska
Tatjana Maria had come into her opening round encounter as an underdog, 11/10 odds to overcome Nadia Podoroska and did just that in straight sets. The German veteran came through 7-5, 6-1 to seal her second round berth.
In a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes, Maria shrugged off two breaks of serves in the first set – both times after she had gotten herself a break – to win it easily in the second.
The world number 92 faced no break-points in the second set and carved out a neat 4-0 lead with a couple of breaks to ensure the win.
This was Maria’s first win in the main draw of a hard court competition this season. Can she make it two in two?
