Pablo Carreño Busta v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings between these two players at the highest level and all seven of them have been won by Thiem. Obviously this record comprises of matches played before Thiem’s wrist injury and consists of one win at the US Open as well.

Carreno Busta Hoping to Replicate Montreal Form

While Carreno Busta was bumped out of the opener he played at the Cincinnati Masters, that could be put down to what had transpired in the competition in the previous week.

The Spaniard had won six matches in a row to complete a title victory at the Canadian Open, his first ever Masters 1000 tournament win. It had included victories over Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, Dan Evans and Hubert Hurkacz.

Carreno Busta would have been as elated as he would have been relieved with that showing after what had gone around in hard court competitions all season.

While he had won four of his five matches at the ATP Cup earlier this year, those had come against lower-ranked players. After that, a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open aside, he lost three of his five matches at Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.

With this Montreal showing, the Spaniard would believe he can repeat his 2017 and 202o US Open showing when he had reached the semifinal.

Thiem Slowly Getting into Groove

The last time Thiem stepped on to the US Open courts, he followed it up by winning that match and lifting the singles crown. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and the Austrian, thanks to an injury-fuelled absence has slid to outside the top 200 on the rankings.

Sure, he has begun to win again.

Like on the clay courts of Gstaad, Thiem reached the semifinal. There was a quarterfinal appearance in Kitzbuhel and then made the third round at Winston-Salem in the lead-up to this competition.

The trouble, however, is at other times, Thiem has looked very ordinary.

Jack Draper allowed him just five games in Winston-Salem. Matteo Berrettini did the same in Gstaad. And even his win over Grigor Dimitrov last week came after his opponent retired from the encounter following a bagel against him.

Can Thiem now be expected to test an in-form Carreno Busta?

Carreño Busta v Thiem Prediction and Tip

While on paper, a 7-0 scoreline in favour of Thiem gives the Austrian some hope, the reality is in sharp contrast. Carreno Busta starts off as not just a favourite but to win in three.
