Third seed Jasmine Paolini held off lucky loser Himeno Sakatsume in the opening round on Tuesday.
The World No. 57, who recently featured in the semifinals of the Palermo and Poland Opens, needed just under 90 minutes to beat the Japanese player 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
After both players traded a break in the first set, Paolini edged a closely contested tiebreak. She got the only break of the second set early in the set and protected the lead to advance.
The Italian won 80% points on the back of her first serve, saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 2 of 3 to improve her season record to 17-18, across levels.
The 26-year-old will now be aiming to reach her fourth quarterfinal of the season. She also made it to the quarterfinals in Lyon in addition to the two semifinals this year.

Marino Sails Into the Next Round
World No. 112 Rebecca Marino made a brisk start, knocking out fellow Canadian Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-3.
Broken in the very first game of the match, Marino regrouped quickly and ran away with the match in just over 60 minutes. She served seven aces and dropped just eight points on her serve in the entire match to ease past the World no. 519.
With the win she is now 6-9 in the main draws this year, and 37-17 overall, having done well at the ITF level.
Marino has featured in three ITF finals this year, all on hard courts, winning one and finishing runner-up in the other two tournaments.
Marino recently reached the quarterfinals in Washington, defeating Venus Williams in the first round of that tournament. Can she reach another tour-level quarterfinal in August?
