Cerundolo Making His Debut

Francisco Cerundolo will make his U.S. Open debut this year. While the World no. 27 has gained 100 places in the rankings since the start of the season, he will have his work cut out in the opening round, when he comes up against a former champion in Andy Murray.

While the 24-year-old Argentine has made quite an impact on his preferred surface, the clay, he is yet to find his feet on hard courts. Although, he did show in Miami this year that he can deliver on hard courts as well.

Cerundolo took out some top names en route the semifinals in Miami, before being halted by Casper Ruud. He was also aided by a couple of retirements along the way, but overall he looked good during the course of the tournament.

It’s been a pretty successful year for Cerundolo, who won his maiden title in Bastad and reached semifinals in Rio and Hamburg in addition to Miami. But his recent form is a bit dodgy as he lost his first round matches at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters.

However, he will take heart from the fact that both those losses came in three-set matches against higher-ranked players. Cerundolo went down fighting to Karen Khachanov in Montreal and then to Roberto Bautista Agut in Cincinnati.

Can he get back to winning ways at the U.S. Open?

Murray Hampered By Cramping Issue

From beginning the year at No. 134 to reaching to his current ranking of No. 49, Andy Murray has made some progress this year. But he has lacked the consistency in the big tournaments, which he would like to fix in the remaining part of the season.

However, that may not happen immediately at the U.S. Open, as he is currently having issues with cramping during matches. While he seems to have slowly overcome his recent issues with groin and back, a new problem has started to bother him and it could hamper his performance at Flushing Meadows.

He has been affected by cramping during the North American hard court swing. He was first hampered during the first round loss in Washington to Mikael Ymer and then again he cramped against Cam Norrie in the second round defeat in Cincinnati. He has won just one match in the last three tournaments and is undergoing a sweat test to get a solution to his cramping issue.

The 35-year-old, who is 20-14 this season, reached two finals this year, in Sydney and Stuttgart, but he couldn’t win a first title since 2019.

At the U.S. Open, he won the 2012 title by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. He has a 46-14 record in the tournament and that includes a runner-up finish in 2008.

Can he address the cramping issue and start off with a win? His road ahead won’t be an easy one, as he could meet John Millman in a potential second round and Matteo Berrettini in the third if both win their first two rounds. Reaching the second week seems unlikely for Murray but at the same time he wouldn’t want to go out in the first round for the second straight year.

Cerundolo v Murray Prediction and Tip

With Murray consistently struggling with cramps recently, it makes Cerundolo a slight favourite going into this contest. However, if Murray is able to resolve his issue ahead of the opening round match, he could be difficult to beat. Expect a good contest with the Argentine edging through.
