At the US Open Series in the lead-up to this tournament, Shapovalov had featured in three tournaments and it took him to get to the third one to even register his first win.
Shapovalov lost in the first round at both Washington and Canadian Open, falling to JJ Wolf and Alex de Minaur before he managed a victory at Cincinnati.
Two rounds in, Shapovalov then went down to Daniil Medvedev in the third round.
Overall, however, Shapovalov will look at how things had gone for him at the Australian Open at the start of the season. He had overcome Reilly Opelka and Alexander Zverev to make it all the way through to the quarterfinals.

Hüsler Much Improved Than Last US Open
Last time around when Hüsler had featured at the US Open, he had fallen in the qualifiers. It was his first ever attempt at this competition and a few months later at Wimbledon this year, he finally made his Grand Slam debut.
Now, he features in his second major main draw encounter and comes into this tournament on the back of a showing to remember at Winston-Salem.
The world number 102 can be expected to jump up a few places when the rankings are updated on the first day of US Open after his performance at that tournament in the lead-up to the US Open.
At the time of writing, Hüsler is through to the semifinals in Winston-Salem, just the second time in his career.
What this could also mean is Hüsler will need to regroup quickly following the rather long time on court just days before this opening round encounter.
