Raducanu will begin her US Open title defence with her first round match at Flushing Meadows as she looks to reclaim some of her old form. And she would like to look back at how she went about her business in Cincinnati just two weeks ago for some of that inspiration.
Because while Raducanu lost in the third round of that competition to Jessica Pegula, it wasn’t before she had overcome Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in successive rounds.
The British number one didn’t just overcome the two experienced pros, but also did that in straight sets and with a bagel involved in both matches.
Earlier this American summer, Raducanu had also clinched straight-set victories at Washington to the quarterfinal there as well.
What Raducanu would be wary of is her opponent in this opener given Cornet’s record as a shock-and-awe-deliverer at times.

Cornet 10-10 on Hard Courts
It’s been a bizarre year for Cornet. Let’s talk about her hard court performances alone and you would know why.
At the Australian Open this year, an out-of-sorts Cornet had made it as far as the quarterfinal of the tournament. More recently, she reached the last eight stage of the Cleveland Open as well.
Amidst these two results, Cornet has featured in eight other hard court competitions, and won just three of the 11 matches she has played in. Clearly not the kind of record she would have liked to have coming into this encounter.
That having been said, Cornet is also one of the very few players this season to have beaten the world number one, Iga Swiatek. This stems from the fact that the Frenchwoman has the ability to raise the game at times.
Which is what could make the Brit very, very wary.

This could be as straightforward as a straight-set win for Raducanu. Or a crushing defeat for her. Yep. This probably makes very little sense but then that’s what Cornet brings to the table at times.
