Etcheverry Hoping To Win

Tomas Martin Etcheverry has come a long way since last year when he lost in the first round of the qualifiers. The Argentine is in the main draw with a chance to improve his ranking even further but very little prep as well. He didn’t play a single hard court even leading up to this opting to play Challengers on clay.

His only hard-court match in recent months came in Los Cabos a few weeks ago when he lost to Jason Kubler in three sets. It showed that he can play on this surface despite being shy about it. Etcheverry has a strong serve which will work well in New York.

Over time, the 23-year-old will certainly develop his hard-court game but a proper challenge awaits in the like of Pablo Andujar. The veteran is still kicking around despite not playing the best tennis. It’s far from terrible it will be a proper test for the Argentine.

He’s 42-25 on the year but only 3-3 on hard courts.

Andujar Still Solid

Pablo Andujar is a well-known veteran who is still kicking around and playing strong tennis. The Spaniard is 25-22 on the year and 4-5 on hard courts. When he plays on the highest level of tennis he finds himself generally overpowered by younger and better players at the moment.

His strongest tennis still comes on clay which makes this US Open participation a tricky one for him. He will be quite vulnerable on these courts especially if his serve remains lacklustre. He did play some warm-ups for this but it was an ITF level that did not offer the same level of tennis as the grand slam will.

Nobody expects him to do that well despite playing a really strong event last year. He reached the 3rd round beating fellow veterans Mikhail Kukushkin and Philipp Kohlschreiber before losing to Medvedev. Expect a solid outing from him but doubtful he can win.

Etcheverry v Andujar Prediction and Tip

So this is an interesting matchup that I don’t think will end in three sets. I just don’t see either player holding the consistency enough to finish off in straight sets. Four sets are a given but I’m leaning towards Etcheverry to win the match.

He’s younger and will generally do better as the match goes on and he has the better serve. It matters in New York and that’s why I’ll side with him.

Tip: Etcheverry to win in four sets: 4/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
