Maria Sharapova decided to withdraw from her WTA St. Petersburg Open second round match with a shoulder problem while Petra Kvitova entered the quarter-final with a win over Victoria Azarenka.

Sharapova, who had won her first match in a WTA tournament in Russia for over a decade when she made the round two, had to withdraw from that encounter against Daria Kasatkina. The tournament organisers said:
“Sharapova is withdrawing from her match today due to a right shoulder injury.”
As a result of that, the third seeded Kasatkina, also from Russia, has moved into the last eight where she will face the winner of the match between Julia Goerges and Vera Zvonareva that will be played later in the day.
In another match, Australian Open runner-up and defending champion Kvitova flew all the way from Melbourne to Russia and won her second round encounter against former Australian Open winner Azarenka.
Azarenka, who was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Margarita Gasparyan in her opening match, went down to the world number two in straight sets, losing 2-6, 6-7.
The top seeded Kvitova will now face one of Veronika Kudermetova or eighth seeded Donna Vekic, who will play each other in a later match.
The remaining second round matches at the St. Petersburg Open will be played on Thursday followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final over the next three days.
