This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Ostapenko Struggling to Deliver

World No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko hasn’t had the best of the US Open swing as she arrived in New York following a handful of disappointing results.

She made it as far as round two in Toronto and Cincinnati before losing to Alison Riske-Amritraj and Madison Keys, respectively. However, the 25-year-old Latvian did enjoy a good run on the hard court events earlier in the season, which should give her some confidence when she steps on the court on Tuesday.

To begin with, Ostapenko was a semifinalist in St. Petersburg, the champion in WTA Dubai, and once again, reached the final four in Doha.

In these events, Jelena dispatched several notable players like Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Amanda Anisimova, and Barbora Krejcikova.

Clearly, Ostapenko (with a record of 25-14i in 2022) is no stranger to winning high-profile events. That said, she will need to step up her game considerably against Zheng.

Zheng, Looking Confident

19-year-old Chinese star Qinwen Zheng has had a phenomenal season. She is set to make her US Open main draw debut with a career-high ranking as World No. 39 and a win-loss tally of 30-14.

Most recently, she reached the quarterfinal in Toronto, where she fell to Karolina Pliskova – but not before moving past the likes of Rebecca Marino, Ons Jabeur, and Bianca Andreescu.

Over the course of the season, her other highlights have been her title run in the Valencia Challenger and ITF Orlando and a semifinal run in Melbourne Set 1 (as a qualifier). Zheng has also done quite well in the majors.

She reached the second round in the Australian Open, the fourth round in the French Open, and round three in Wimbledon.

Ostapenko v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Backing Zheng here can lead to good returns. Ostapenko is struggling, and given the possibilities of upsets in round one, this one is right at the top.
