Andrey Rublev v Soon-woo Kwon Head to Head

There have been three previous encounters between these two players and Rublev has won all three of them. Interestingly all three matches came earlier this year with Rublev defeating Kwon at Rotterdam, Dubai and Roland-Garros.

Rublev Struggles Remain Real

Having made a solid start to the season, Rublev’s game has fallen a wee bit behind in more recent times and there were glimpses of that even in his opening round victory here at Flushing Meadows.

With just seven wins from his last 13 matches, Rublev almost failed to win another one as he lost a two sets to love lead to Laslo Djere.

In the end, Rublev managed to squeak past his opponent in five, eventually winning 7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 in three hours and 44 minutes to move into the second round.

In fact, Rublev went 4-2 up in the final set only for Djere to level it up with a break back to take it to 4-4. It was at that stage that the Serb’s steam ran out and Rublev completed a win with the final break of serve.

Rublev will need to do a lot better against Kwon to make it four wins in a row against him.

Kwon 8-11 on Hard Courts This Year

While Rublev has shown a recent dip in fortunes, Kwon’s issues have been the consistency with which he has struggled in hard court competitions this season.

In fact, he has barely won anything on hard courts and had it not been for a player like Fernando Verdasco – who is already all but done with his career and mostly known for his fortunes outside of hard courts – Kwon might not even have been here.

Kwon registered a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 win in three hours and 19 minutes, making it to the second round for just the second time at the US Open.

What’s interesting to note is that in the 14 hard court competitions that Kwon has played in this season, both outdoors and indoors included, he has never made it past the second round at any.

And playing against Rublev that might not be changing.

Rublev v Kwon Prediction and Tip

While Rublev’s recent struggles are well-chronicled, it would be safe to assume he should have no such issues against Kwon and blast past him.
