Irina Begu v Yue Yuan Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Romanian, who is 32, and her Chinese opponent, nine years younger.

This is the third time that Begu has made the second round in New York, but the first time in four years.
And she did it the hard way by coming from behind to beat the number 32 seed, Elise Mertens, of Belgium.
The Romanian began on the back foot, with her serve under pressure, and she had already saved four break points before she dropped her serve.
Mertens went on to take the set and seemed in control at that stage, especially when she broke Begu again at the start of the second set. But the Romanian rallied, and reeled off six games in a row to take the match into a deciding set.
Again, Mertens began the third set by breaking the Begu serve, but yet again, could not hold on to the advantage she had created for herself. Instead, she not only allowed Begu to break back, but forge ahead with another break.
The Romanian was left with the simple task of serving out for the match.

Qualifier Yuan Notches Up First Grand Slam Win
Yuan has just notched up her first victory at a Grand Slam event by beating the Australian wildcard Jaimee Fourlis in the first round.
The Chinese qualifier took immediate control of the match by breaking the Australian’s serve in her opening service game, and soon raced into a five love lead. Fourlis pulled one of the breaks back, but it was too late to retrieve the first set by then.
The first four games of the second set went with serve, but then Yuan broke once more, and it was one way traffic after that. Fourlis could only win a handful of points more as Yuan strolled to victory.

Begu has much more experience of playing in Grand Slam tournaments than her Chinese opponent, and she will be counting on that as she plots her course into the third round.
