Serena Williams has caused quite a stir among the bookmakers following her brilliant round two win at the 2022 US Open. In the men’s half, Andy Murray and Jack Draper continue to be the favourites for English punters. Here’s a look at how things have gone in the second round day three.

Williams Tames Kontaveit

Serena Williams started the tournament with outright odds of 50/1 – that equation has changed to 16/1 (with bet365) after she knocked out the number two seed Anett Kontaveit in three sets.

Although Williams did commit far too many unforced errors, she bagged the win with home support, incredible experience, and an incomparable pedigree. The 40-year-old is now the favourite to reach the quarterfinal – especially with the untimely exits of Leylah Fernandez and Barbora Krejcikova.

However, she may face some threat from the in-form Russian Liudmila Samsonova in round four – now at 9/1 (with bet365) after her brilliant run in the US Open swing. But punters may want to stick with Serena – considering that she is a 23-time Grand Slam winner with a litany of records to her name.

Cori Gauff is another player to keep an eye out for – she is now 8/1 to win the tournament but standing in her way is Madison Keys (20/1). Keys is the 2017 US Open finalist and is highly experienced.

Similarly, bettors may also want to consider Bianca Andreescu – now at 16/1 after her straight-set win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. She faces Caroline Garcia next – who is at a surprising 8/1. But given the Canadian’s aggressive play, Garcia faces a tough task.

Murray Makes it to Round Three

35-year-old Andy Murray is now at 66/1 (with bet365) after making it to the round of 32 at the Flushing Meadows. He is a two-time finalist here (winning the tournament in 2012), looking to build his footing on the tour after bothersome trysts with injuries and form woes.

Murray has done well to beat the likes of Francisco Cerundolo and Emilio Nava – but faces a stern test in the number 13 seed Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini seems to be a big favourite among the bookies – pegged at 14/1 (with bet365) – following his superb year. However, the Italian’s hard court pedigree is not strong enough to justify such odds. Murray has a good chance of winning here, and punters may want to lock in the odds at which he is priced right now.

Similarly, Murray’s compatriot Jack Draper has also done well in the US Open this year. He is now placed at 80/1 after his opening wins over Emil Ruusuvuori and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

It is yet to be seen how far he can go. Draper will next face Karen Khachanov (125/1 with bet365) and possibly Pablo Carreno Busta (50/1) thereafter. But backing Jack to win his next couple of games at the very least is not a bad idea.

Lastly, there’s the exciting and probable clash between Nick Kyrgios (5/1 with bet365) and Daniil Medvedev (15/8). The two are on a collision path and will likely meet in the fourth round. Both players have a relatively easy affair in round three and should clear those comfortably.

Depending on who wins in the fourth round, the odds on the winner will be slashed dramatically.
