World No. 7 Casper Ruud outlasted American Tommy Paul in a four-hour-and 23-minute thriller on Friday.
In a neck and neck contest, the first three sets were decided in tiebreaks with Ruud winning the first and third and Paul taking the second.
The 29th seed Paul made sure they didn’t need a fourth tiebreak as he wrapped up the set 7-5 to force the decider. But after four closely contest sets, it was all one-way traffic in the fifth with Ruud dominating from start to finish.
He barely put a foot wrong in the final set, not facing a single break point, while converting half of six and bageling his opponent in just 30 minutes. Ruud won a staggering 180 points in the match, 13 more than Paul to win the contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-0.
The fifth seed, who began his campaign with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Britain’s Kyle Edmund, needed two hours and 48 minutes to win his second round match against Tim van Rijthoven. Ruud fought back after losing the first set to beat the Dutchman 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
This is the first time that the Norwegian has reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in what is his fifth attempt. Can the French Open finalist continue moving forward in the tournament?
Moutet Edges Past Cachin
From losing in the third qualifying round to reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, it has so far been an incredible journey for French lucky loser Corentin Moutet.
The 23-year-old left-hander ousted Argentina’s Pedro Cachín in the third round on Friday. The three-hour-and-17-minute contest saw Moutet convert 7 of 15 break points and save 4 of 7 to beat Cachin 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Moutet struck 47 winners and made 43 unforced errors against Cachin’s 40 winners and 45 unforced errors. Both players won plenty of net points as well, with the Frenchman winning 38 of 53 and the Argentine winning 39 of 62.
Ranked No. 112, Moutet had overcome Stan Wawrinka in the first round after the Swiss retired while trailing 4-6, 6-7 (7-9). Moutet then needed four sets to beat the 21st seed Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. The 23-year-old improved to 10-7 in 2022 following Friday’s win.
He reached just one tour-level quarterfinal this year, falling in the last four stage in Adelaide-2. Can he reach another on Sunday?
