Consistency at the top level has been an issue for Lesia Tsurenko this year. The World No. 92 is 23-13 overall this season but most of her wins have come in the qualifying rounds. When it comes to main draw matches, she has an 8-9 season record and is 0-4 on hard courts.
Most recently she went down to Paula Badosa in the opening round of the U.S. Open.
Tsurenko has a 4-1 record in tour-level finals, and all those finals were played on hard courts. This year, she may not have succeeded in winning a single hard court match but she has an overall record of 6-7 on the surface with all of the six wins coming in the qualifying rounds.
The 33-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of 23 in 2019, will be looking to up her game in Slovenia. Can she start with a win?

Ruse Comes through Qualifiers
Elena-Gabriela Ruse made it to the main draw of the tournament after convincingly winning both her qualifying round matches.
The 24-year-old Romanian defeated Germany’s Yana Morderger 6-1, 6-4 in the first qualifying round and then ousted Ziva Falkner of Slovenia 6-3, 6-0 in the second qualifying round.
Ruse is 16-17 overall this season and 13-7 on hard courts. The Romanian had an impressive run in 2021, reaching two clay court finals, winning in Hamburg and finishing runner-up in Palermo. But hasn’t been able to have the same sort of impact this season, however, she has played a lot more main draw matches this year and has an 8-16 season record in those matches.
However, Ruse is yet to win two consecutive main draw matches. All her eight wins this year have come in the first rounds.
She will be eager to score with another opening round win on Tuesday.
Tsurenko v Ruse Prediction and Tip
Tsurenko’s experience, particularly on hard courts, gives her the edge in this contest. Expect Ruse to put up a fight, but the Ukrainian to edge through.
