Inconsistent Martincova Looking to Get Into a Rhythm

It has been an up-and-down season for the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova, but unfortunately there have been more disappointments than successes for the World No. 66.

The 27-year-old was very good during a 41-27 season last year, which also included a maiden WTA final appearance at the Prague Open.

Martincova is 18-22 from all levels this year and 13-13 on hard courts. Her best this year was a semifinal finish in Nottingham (on grass). Apart from that she reached just one more quarterfinal and that was in St. Petersburg.

While Martincova has won a number of qualifying matches, she is 11-21 in the main draws and is 3-6 from her last six main draw appearances, since her first round exit in Wimbledon. All these six tournaments were hard court events. It’s an indication that she is not in the best of form and could struggle in Slovenia as well. However she will be expected to win her opener against a player who has been struggling to win matches.

Voegele Enters as Lucky Loser

Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele was edged out by Britain’s Jodie Anna Burrage in a three-set second qualifying round, but she still found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.

She will be hoping to make the most of the opportunity, but Voegele has struggled big time this year and is 1-4 from her main draw appearances at the tour level this season.

The only match she won was in Lyon against Elsa Jacquemot. She hasn’t played a main-draw match since featuring in the second round of the Miami Open as a lucky loser. And she hasn’t had much success in the lower level tournaments either. Her best this year was a semifinal finish at an ITF event in Portschach, Austria, but that was the only event where she went that deep. She hasn’t even reached the last eight of another lower level event.

Ranked No. 237th, the former top 50 player, has played in just one tour-level final and one WTA 125 final. She has eight ITF titles from 16 finals though. The 32-year-old has an almost similar record on clay and hard, but has seen a considerable dip in form and rankings over the last coupld of years.
