The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27 year old Canadian, and her Australian opponent, two years her junior.

Zhao Twice Winner on the ITF Tour This Year

Although there are several players with the surname Zhao on the WTA tour, in the case of Carol, although she was born in China, her family emigrated to Canada when she was seven years old.

For a brief period four years ago she was Canada’s top female player, but has never quite fulfilled the potential that she showed as a junior.

However, she has enjoyed a successful few months on the ITF tour, winning tournament in South Korea in June, and in the USA in July.

And she has appeared in the main tour as well this year, first of all in Rabat after coming through qualifying, and then in Toronto, where she was given a wildcard. Unfortunately for her, she was beaten in the first round on both occasions.

Tjandramulia Beats Two Higher Ranked Opponents in Qualifying

For those unfamiliar with her, Tjandramulia was born in Jakarta, Indonesia but raised in Australia, and plays under their flag.

She made her WTA debut back in 2014, but is usually to be found on the ITF tour, where she has appeared in three finals, although the last of those in Japan was more than five years ago.

However, she has enjoyed more recent doubles’ success, and won a tournament in Portugal in June, her eighth in all.

Normally she would not expect to enter even a qualifying competition for a main tour event, but the weakened field in Chennai opened up the possibility for her.

Nevertheless, she still had to beat two much higher ranked players in Ekaterinna Kazionova, and Yuki Maito of Japan, to earn her place in the first round.

Zhao v Tjandramulia Prediction and Tip

With more than 230 places separating them in the world rankings, Zhao will start as the heavy favourite. Not only does she have main tour experience this year, but she has also won two recent titles at the ITF level, more than the Australian has managed in her entire career.

Tip: Zhao to win: 2/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
