Linette Off to a Flying Start

World No. 67 Magda Linette got off to a great start at the Chennai Open as the Polish player knocked out Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets.

The two-time tour-level champion faced some stern resistance in the first set as the Japanese came back from a break down twice in the first set, once when Linette was serving for the set at 5-3. However, the Japanese couldn’t hold serve in the 10th game with Linette drawing first blood.

It was a breeze for Linette in the second set as she bageled the World No. 125 to complete a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Such was the Pole’s dominance in the second set that the Japanese could hold just two points on her serve in the entire set.

With the win, the 30-year-old improved to 29-23 overall and 14-12 on hard courts. On Thursday, she will be looking to reach her fifth tour-level quarterfinal of the season. Linette featured in the last eight in Charleston, Strasbourg, Prague and Cleveland. She also reached the quarters in the WTA 125 in Saint Malo and was a finalist at an ITF event at home last month.

Selekhmeteva Breezes Past Papamichail

World No. 142 Oksana Selekhmeteva too had a good start as she breezed past Despina Papamichail of Greece in just 67 minutes.

The 19-year-old Russian was broken in the very first game of the match, but she quickly overcame the early setback and won the next four games in a row to build a 4-1 lead. There was no more break in the opening set with Selekhmeteva going one-up.

In the second, after both players held their first service games, Selekhmeteva took charge. She didn’t allow the World no. 197 to win another game in the match and broke her thrice to capture the contest 6-3, 6-1.

Following the win, the left-hander improved to 27-16 overall in 2022 and 14-6 on hard courts.

Selekhmeteva, who won a clay court title in Montpellier at the ITF level this year, will be aiming to reach her second tour-level quarterfinal of the season. She had gone from qualifiers to quarterfinals at the Prague Open, taking out Sorana Cirstea and Clara Paquet in the first two rounds of the main draw.
