World No. 45 Anastasia Potapova is off to a decent start in Portoroz as she dispatched Claire Liu in the opener with 6-4, 7-6(5).
The 21-year-old Russian has enjoyed a decent spell in 2022 as she arrived in Slovenia with a tally of 30-20 and a career-best singles ranking. Her highlights include a title run in the Istanbul Cup and a runner-up feat in the Prague Open. She was also the semifinalist in Hamburg European Open and WTA Lausanne.
Potapova has done well to beat the likes of Anett Kontaveit, Barbora Krejcikova, Irina-Camelia Begu, Petra Martic, and Veronika Kudermetova.
Having beaten several prominent players on the circuit this season, the youngster is bustling with confidence and momentum.
Anastasia will fancy her chances of a good run in the tournament this week, considering that her next opponent will likely be the out-of-form Emma Raducanu.

Parry Upsets Vekic
Diane Parry, current World No. 71, is also at a career-high position in the WTA singles ranking. Her year hasn’t been as impressive as Potapova’s, but there she has had her moments nonetheless, with her record now at 19-21.
The 20-year-old Frenchwoman began her campaign this week with a three-set win over Donna Vekic. Parry added to Vekic’s form woes with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win.
Looking at Diane’s overall year, she has fallen notably in the early rounds of most tournaments. A few exceptions include the French Open and Wimbledon, where she made it to round three after beating the likes of Krejcikova and Kaia Kanepi.
In addition, Parry was a semifinalist in the Gaiba Challenger and WTA Granby and a quarterfinalist in Palermo. Clearly, consistency hasn’t been a strong suit for her, but she can definitely surprise when she is in form.

Potapova is the odds-on favourite and she should do well to win this one. However, Parry will not go down easy and is certainly poised to put up a fight. Expect an entertaining affair.
