Emma Raducanu v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

This will be their second professional meeting; they last met at an ITF event in Roehampton 2 2019, where Friedsam won in straight sets.

Raducanu Moves Past Yastremska

Emma Raducanu, seeded number one for the tournament with a wildcard, started her campaign with a 6-2, 5-3 (retired) victory over Dayana Yastremska.

It was a positive start for the 19-year-old Brit, who has now slipped down to the #83 spot in the singles ranking after failing to defend her US Open title. She fell to Alize Cornet in the opener at Flushing Meadows 3-6, 3-6.

Nonetheless, it is a good learning lesson for Raducanu as she now starts from scratch again, albeit with a world of experience and lessons. She is also learning to take things easy and be burdened by the world’s expectations.

Raducanu has also got time at her side; sooner or later, she will likely reach the top again.

Emma’s singles tally now stands at 13-16. Her highlights include a handful of third-round appearances in the Cincinnati Open, Indian Wells, and Madrid Open and a couple of third-round stints in the Stuttgart Open and Citi Open.

Friedsam, in a Similar Rut

28-year-old Anna-Lena Friedsam, former World No. 45 and current World No. 213, is in a rut herself with a tally of 14-20. Most of her current season has gone by in early exits, and the handful of wins she did pick up, came in low-tier events.

Most recently, the German was a quarterfinalist in ITF Aldershot; before that, she was a semifinalist in Brescia, Italy. Friedsam was also a semifinalist in the Karlsruhe Challenger.

Here in Portoroz, Anna-Lena began as a qualifier and beat Lara Smejkal and Harriet Dart to reach the main draw. In the opener, she knocked out Elizabeth Mandlik – a 21-year-old American prodigy – with 0-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Raducanu v Friedsam Prediction and Tip

This is an evenly matched affair that can go either way. Both players are visibly struggling and aren’t in the best of form.

Moreover, Raducanu’s fairly superior pedigree is undone by Friedsam’s vast experience. Expect a close encounter.
