17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova has all the makings of becoming a tennis legend. It seems to be a matter of time before she finally announces herself in style on the WTA Tour.
Most recently, she reached round two in the US Open as a qualifier after beating the likes of Chloe Paquet and Xinyu Wang en route. Similarly, earlier in the year, she had reached the fourth round in the Miami Open after upsetting experienced stars like Danka Kovinic, Elise Mertens, and Victoria Azarenka.
Apart from this, Linda also won the ITF title in Cancun in February.
Here in Chennai, she has taken advantage of a fairly open draw and moved past Liang En-Shuo of Taiwan in three sets and later, the veteran Swede Rebecca Peterson with 6-4, 6-2.
Clearly, Fruhvirtova can hold her own against the prominent names, and with Gracheva, she will certainly fancy her chances.

Gracheva, Yet to Drop a Set
Number two seed Varvara Gracheva has done well in the 2022 Chennai Open as she swept aside Mariia Tkacheva and Carol Zhao in straight sets, losing only 11 games in the process.
With these wins, the 22-year-old Russian is now 22-23, ranking #80 in the singles ranking.
Gracheva has endured a mediocre year so far. She arrived in India with a 10-match losing streak, with her last win coming in a Challenger event in June. She had lost her opening-round bouts in all US Open events – a couple of them to lower-ranked players like Peyton Stearns and Ysaline Bonaventure.
Her season hasn’t quite gone according to plan, with her best result being a third-round stint in the French Open and a round of 16 appearance in WTA Dubai (as a qualifier).

Gracheva may be the seeded player, but this match is Fruhvirtova’s to lose in all regards. While the Czech is still gaining experience, she has had a much better year than her Russian counterpart and is also armed with a fair bit of momentum.
