Not that there was any surprise when Linette won her second round match against the Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva but to have done it in the manner she did spoke largely about Linette’s form this week.
A quarterfinalist at the Cleveland Open as well, Linette made it to another last eight match here. This will be her fifth such appearance of the season, and probably the easiest that’s come for her.
Because over the first two rounds here in Chennai, Linette has dropped just six games and bagelled both her opponents in one of the sets. Against Selekhmeteva, Linette ran away a 6-2, 6-0 winner, having also gotten to that stage in Prague.
What Linette would now hope for is to reach the semifinal round for the first time this season at a WTA competition.

Marino 31-11 on Hard Courts
Across all levels of tennis including the ITF circuit and qualifiers of the main WTA events, Marino has won 31 and lost just 11 matches in hard court competitions. This includes the two wins she has registered in this tournament where Marino has registered back to back straight-set victories.
It started with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Anna Blinkova in the first round before Marino ran through her second round opponent, Katarzyna Kawa to make it to the last eight.
Marino won 7-5, 6-3 to make it to the last eight, with this being the third successive tournament at which the Canadian has won successive matches.
As a result, Marino has climbed up more than 70 places from her worst ranking this year and another quarterfinal here should help her take another leap forward.
