O’Connell Hasn’t Won a Match Since May

When looking at just the main draw rounds of ATP competitions, O’Connell’s record has really been a letdown in recent times. It’s been nearly four months since he won an encounter, following which the Aussie has to one defeat after another.

Once ranked in the top 100, O’Connell has slipped to 130th in the world at the moment and that could be weighing on his mind coming into this encounter. The overall 3-10 win-loss record for the season would make it no better either.

Which is why, O’Connell would do well to focus on the positives and one of them has been his performances on the Challenger circuit. He has already won a title this season and was a finalist in Porto in the leadup to the US Open Series.

Can the Aussie make it past his countryman to record a rare main draw victory?

Kubler Holding His Own

While Kubler would love to do a lot better than his current 97th-ranking, especially given he is already 29 years old, his recent record point to him being in much better form than his usual self.

In fact this whole season Kubler has won a lot more than he has lost at all levels, with his three Challenger title victory putting him in a good stead.

So much so, Kubler has improved from the 220th rank that he was at in February to currently breaking into the top 100.

Kubler made the second round at the US Open in his last tournament, had a third round appearance at Winston-Salem and was a semifinalist in Newport before that. None of that, however, trumps his fourth round appearance at Wimbledon which would have given him a brilliant shot at breaking into the top 80 had it not been for the points issue with the tournament.

He could be heavily favoured to win this.

O’Connell v Kubler Prediction and Tip

While there’s not much to choose between the two players when it comes to their ranking, Kubler’s form makes him an overwhelming favourite.

Tip: Kubler to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
