Samsonova Upsets Rybakina

Liudmila Samsonova, age 23, is off to a brilliant start in the 2022 WTA Tokyo as she upset the reigning Wimbledon Champion, number eight seed Elena Rybakina in straight sets.

The Russian dominated the entirety of the match as she won 6-2, 6-4 with a first-service win rate of 84%.

Samsonova is having herself a career-best season; she shortly became the World No. 25 before sliding down to the #30 spot. Her record stands at an impressive 24-15, following a superb run in the US Open swing.

She won back-to-back titles in Citi Open and Cleveland Open, beating the likes of Elise Mertens, Ajla Tomljanovic, Kaia Kanepi, Emma Raducanu, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Then, at the Flushing Meadows, Liudmila made it to the fourth round before bowing out to Tomljanovic.

With the wind behind her back, she is well-positioned to reach the quarterfinal.

Wang Survives Perez

20-year-old Xinyu Wang had a shaky start in Tokyo as she survived a three-setter against Ellen Perez. It took the Chinese youngster two hours to win with 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 with a rather mediocre first-service win rate.

It has been a rocky year for Wang, who is now ranked World No. 78 with a record of 16-20.

Her highlights entail a sole ITF title in Spain and a WTA doubles runner-up feat in Abierto Zapopan.

Wang arrived in Japan after losing six of her seven opening-round matches, the most recent being in the US Open to Linda Fruhvirtova. Many of her other defeats have come at the hands of youngster and at times, lower-ranked players.

The exception to this is the Vancouver Challenger, where she beat Kristina Mladenovic but ended up losing to Maddison Inglis in round two.

Samsonova v Wang Prediction and Tip

This match is Samsonova’s to lose; she has the form and momentum while Xinyu is visibly struggling to deliver wins. Expect a one-sided affair here.
