Kudermetova Storms into Quarters

Number four seed Veronika Kudermetova is having herself quite a season. She is the new World No. 13 (a career-best feat for her) and has an impeccable record of 33-17.

Starting with a bye into round two here, she beat Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-0, 6-1 in a clinical fashion to fire warning shots.

There have only been a few tournaments this season where Veronika has not made it to the mid-rounds or beyond. The 25-year-old Russian has been largely consistent throughout, including reaching the fourth round in the US Open and Cincinnati Open, and the semis in WTA San Jose recently.

Kudermetova was also a quarterfinalist in the French Open and Indian Wells Open and runner-up in Melbourne 1, Dubai, and Istanbul.

On the doubles circuit, she reached five WTA finals – including the Qatar Open, Miami Open, and Italian Open, effectively putting her in the top five in the doubles ranking.

Maia, Having a Sensational Year

Beatriz Haddad Maia is now 46-19 following her opening round wins in Tokyo. In the first round, the number five seed beat Yuki Naito 6-4, 6-2 to set up a clash with Naomi Osaka.

However, the round two clash did not go through as Osaka withdrew from the match, citing fitness concerns. This gave the 26-year-old Brazilian a walkover into the quarters.

A quick look at her form will tell you why she is poised to give Kudermetova a run for her money. Beatriz won the titles in Nottingham and Birmingham and was the runner-up in the Canadian Open. She also did well on the Challenger circuit by reaching the final in Saint-Malo and Paris.

Even on the doubles, Maia won the Sydney International and Nottingham Open and reached the final in the Australian Open.

Having delivered superb results on all three surfaces – beating several prominent players like Iga Swiatek, Belinda Bencic, Karolina Pliskova, and Simona Halep in the process – Maia is a force to be reckoned with.
