World no. 30 Lorenzo Musetti survived a first round scare as the Italian had to rally from a set down to beat Bulgaria’s Alexandar Lazarov in two hours and 42 minutes.
The fourth seed, who had a first round bye, was outplayed in the first set tiebreak. Lazaroz served for the match at 6-5 in the second set, but Musetti broke back to draw level and then took charge of the match. He won a closely contested second set tiebreak and then raced to win in the final set to knock out the World no. 334, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
The 20-year-old Italian improved to 23-21 following the second round win. He had won his maiden ATP title in Hamburg this year. But while he has been good on clay, he has a 9-11 record on hard court this season.
He has not made it to the last four of a hard court tournament in 2022. Can he do that in Sofia?

Struff Breezes Past Humbert
Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff marched into the quarterfinals with a straight sets drubbing of France’s Ugo Humbert.
The 132nd-ranked Struff dominated the second round contest from start to finish needing just 62 minutes to dispatch the World no. 110, 6-3, 6-1.
Struff didn’t face a single break point in the match, while he broke the lefty twice in both the sets. Another interesting stat, the german won 95% points (21 of 22) on his first serve. However, he got just 54% of his first serves right.
Playing as a qualifier, Struff had scored a come-from-behind win over Dusan Lajovic in the opening round. He had won both his qualifying matches in straight sets. The second round win means he is one a four match winning streak entering the last eight.
This will be Struff’s first tour-level quarterfinal of the season. Can he keep the run going?

Although Struff’s done well in the tournament, Musetti is the favourite to win this contest. Expect the Italian to advance to the semifinals.
