Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Jérémy Chardy Head to Head
The two men have met four times before, although it has been more than four years since their last meeting at the Canadian Open in 2014.
Tsonga leads the series by three matches to one, with Chardy’s solitary win coming in Canada in 2012.
Tsonga – on the Comeback Trail
Tsonga has been near the top of the world rankings for more than a decade. He has 16 ATP career titles to his name, has reached the quarter-final stages at least of all four Grand Slam events, and is an Olympic silver medallist.
However, the last year has not been kind to him. Playing in the same tournament last year he picked up a hamstring injury and then went on to have knee surgery that ruled him out for the rest of the season. In the process, he dropped out of the world’s top 50 for the first time since 2007, and is now ranked down at 177.
He is now beginning his fightback. He began the year by reaching the semi-final in Brisbane before losing to Daniil Medvedev, and although he was outclassed by Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, he was in good company in that tournament.
ATP Montpellier is his third tournament of the year. Entering as a wildcard, he struggled to beat compatriot Ugo Humbert in the first round, before recording a more comfortable win against Gilles Simon in the round of 16.
Chardy, the Mr. Consistent
Chardy has been in the world’s top 50 for a number of years without ever really threatening to break into the top echelons of the game. His career high ranking of 25 in January 2013 compares not unfavourably with his current standing of world number 35, but you need to go back nearly a decade for his solitary ATP title win at Stuttgart in 2009.
His form in 2019 has been encouraging though. He reached the semi-final in Brisbane, losing to the eventual winner Kei Nishikori, and although he was knocked out in the first round in Sydney by Andreas Seppi, he took Alexander Zverev to five sets in Melbourne. He has cruised through his first two matches in Montpellier this week.
Tsonga v Chardy Predictions & Tips
Despite the fact that Chardy is currently, on paper, the much higher ranked player, Tsonga is odds-on to win at 2/5. The 33-year old has won many more tournaments, has been to a Grand Slam final and been beaten at the semi-final stage twice in two others, and is beginning to get back to the form he showed before his injury problems.
Chardy is a consistent player, and, on his day could cause an upset, so odds of 9/4 could be attractive for some.
