Daniil Medvedev v Martin Klizan Head to Head
The two players have crossed paths only once on the tour so far. They met in the 2018 edition of ATP Tokyo, where Medvedev clinched a straight-set victory.
Medvedev’s Solid Start to the Season
The 22-year-old Russian headed to Sofia on the back of a stellar performance in January. He started the season in Brisbane, where he lost in the final to Kei Nishikori. However, his path to the final comprised him overcoming some of the biggest names in tennis like Andy Murray, Milos Raonic, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
He then played in the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round after upsetting the Belgian No. 1, David Goffin.
Last season, Medvedev won three singles titles – the most notable of which came in Tokyo. He started the tournament as a qualifier and made it all the way to the final to become the champion. It was the second time that season he achieved that feat – he did the exact same thing in Sydney too. As for his third title, it came in Winston-Salem.
He also reached the penultimate rounds in Rotterdam, Basel, and Moscow – a feat that helped him move into the top 20 and achieve his single-best ranking as the World No. 16. The young Russian is heading into this match after defeating Robin Haase in three sets.
Klizan Finds His Momentum
This is the first time this season that Klizan has reached the quarterfinal in a tournament. So far, he had barely made it past the early rounds. In Sydney, he lost in the second round to Andreas Seppi while in Melbourne, he lost his opening match to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
However, in Sofia, he started his campaign on a great note. In the first match here, he defeated Mirza Basic after which, he moved past the German qualifier Daniel Brands with 7-6(5), 6-4.
Klizan is currently the World No. 38 and he finished his previous season with a win-loss tally of 22-9. He was the runner-up in St. Petersburg, where he defeated some big names like Stan Wawrinka and Denis Shapovalov. The Slovakian was also a quarterfinalist in Barcelona and the champion in Kitzbuhel.
Medvedev v Klizan Prediction and Tips
This match is certainly going to be highly interesting. Medvedev will start as the favourite here owing to his ranking and recent momentum. However, Klizan is more than capable of stunning the 22-year-old Russian. It wouldn’t be surprising if this one goes to three sets.
