Martinez Sends Out Munar

Jaume Munar had come into the match with the scalp of Casper Ruud under his belt and was a 1/2 favourite against Pedro Martinez. It turned out to be a damp squib in the second round for him as Martinez found himself a way to carve out a comeback from behind win against the favourite.

In a match lasting two hours and 38 minutes, Martinez was a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 winner over Munar with a total of 11 breaks of serves coming through in the match.

Neither player acquitted themselves well on serve, winning less than 60% of their first serve points. It was Munar’s eight double-faults that came to Martinez’s rescue who then came back from a set and 3-0 down to win 12 of the next 13 games.

Can he now make it to his second semifinal of the season?

Kwon Wins Successive Matches for First Time in 2022

He won his maiden ATP title last season but Kwon’s performance in 2022 has been so lacklustre he has fallen to 120th in the world. So much so that before coming into this tournament, Kwon hadn’t won successive matches in the main draw of any of the tournaments this season – and he has played a handful.

Which is why the pressure would have been squarely on Kwon when despite starting out his second round match against Mackenzie McDonald as a favourite.

In the end, Kwon needed his time, more than two hours on court actually, to come through 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 and make it through to the quarterfinal.

He endured 14 aces from McDonald and broke his opponent four times while not facing a single break-point to clinch his last eight berth. And Kwon now starts off a favourite here.

Martinez v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Kwon’s experience on hard court surfaces make him a favourite against a clay-courter but we expect this to be a hard-fought encounter that goes the distance.
