Matteo Berrettini v Márton Fucsovics Head to Head
This will be the first time that the pair will meet in an ATP event.
Berrettini – Part of the New Breed
Berrettini, at 22, is part of the generation of new talent that is starting to rise toward the top of world tennis. Although he turned pro in 2015, it was not until two years later that he began to enter the main draw at ATP events.
2018 saw him win his first ATP title, beat Roberto Batuista Agut in the Swiss Open final, and also reached his highest world ranking to date of 52.
This year his results have been disappointing prior to this week. Batuista Agut got his revenge in Doha, and he was beaten by Leonardo Mayer in the second round in Auckland. He also fell at the first hurdle in Melbourne, beaten by the eventual semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
However, this week he has already enjoyed victories over the top seed Karen Khachanov and put out the experienced Fernando Verdasco. The Italian will start Saturday’s match with high hopes of reaching his second ATP Final.
Fucsovics – Underwhelming Career to Date
Fucsovics has had an average career to date. Once a top ranked junior, the 27-year old turned pro in 2009, but it would take him until May 2018 to break into the world’s top 50, the same month he won his solitary ATP on clay, the Geneva Open.
He reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2018, but, apart from that, has never been beyond the second round in any of the majors.
His results this year have been typically mixed. He reached the 16 sixteen in Sydney before going down to John Millman, and then was beaten in straight sets by Borna Čilić in the round of 64 in Melbourne.
Arguably his best performance in 2019 to date came in Doha where he took the first set of Novak Djokovic before losing the next two.
This week he recorded an impressive win against Andreas Seppi in the first round, before batting his way past the German qualifier Yannick Maden in the round of 16. He then had the fortune of a quarter-final walk over when his prospective opponent Roberto Bautista Agut was forced to withdraw.
Berrettini v Fucsovics Predictions & Tips
The bookmakers make Berrettini favourites to win the match at 13/19, but you can get 17/13 on Fucsovics to progress.
Whilst there is very little in their world rankings to suggest much of a difference between the two, the odds favour the Italian based on his performance this week, where he has already put out the top seeded Karen Khachanov, and then beat another seed to defeat Fernando Verdasco.
If he plays like that on Saturday, Berrettini may just have too much for his opponent.
