Elise Mertens v Claire Liu Head to Head
A couple of weeks ago, they met in Tokyo for the first time and Liu won that match with ease in straight sets.

Mertens Ends Uchijima’s Gutsy Run
World no. 42 Elise Mertens reached her first singles semifinal of the season on Friday as she ended Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima’s gutsy run with a three-set victory.
The Belgian, who won a doubles title this year from six finals, has surprisingly struggled in singles. While she reached the last 16 of three majors, she had made it to just two quarterfinals before arriving in Monastir.
However, the six-time tour-level champion has played well in Tunisia and is one win away from reaching an 11th career final. Mertens had begun her Jasmin Open challenge with a straight forward 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jaqueline Cristian. In the next round, she came back from a set down to defeat Greece’s Despina Papamichail 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, Mertens dominated from the start, bagelling the World no. 124 in the first set. Uchijima, playing in her first tour-level quarterfinal, raised her game in the second, tying the match at one-set apiece.
There were plenty of breaks in the final set as well, with Mertens dominating, then Uchijima fighting back. The Japanese also saved two match points on her serve to make it 4-5, but she couldn’t break the Belgian in the next game who convreted a fourth match point to win 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Mertens converted 8 of 18 break points and saved 4 of 10 during the engaging battle. Can the fifth seed extend her stay in Tunisia by a day?

Liu Tops the Top Seed
World no. 73 Claire Liu stunned top seed and home favourite Ons Jabeur on Friday to march into the semifinals of the Jasmin Open.
Liu had reached her maiden tour-level final earlier this year in Rabat and now the 22-year-old is a win away from reaching her second final of the season.
The American gave the World no. 2 a tough fight from the start. She got the solitary break of the opening set and then went down fighting in the second set. There were a total of seven breaks of serve in the second with the Tunisian getting four of them.
In the final set, it was Liu to break first and go up 4-3, but Jabeur responded immediately to draw level at 4-4. The joy of the local fans was short lived as Liu restored the advantage by breaking once again to take a 5-4 lead. She served out the set in the next game to complete a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Liu, who also won the WTA 125 in Paris this year, is 29-21 from all levels this year.
She had begun her Monastir challenge by beating Anna Konjuh in straight sets. She didn’t drop a set in teh second round either, defeating Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-2.
Mertens v Liu Prediction and Tip
A fortnight ago, Liu defeated Mertens 6-4, 6-1 in their first ever meeting. The latter has a chance to avenge her Tokyo defeat to Liu. However, the American will have the psychological edge going into this contest. She also knocked out the top seed and World no. 2 Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals and so she will be extremely confident going into the final four clash. Expect the match to go the distance with Liu edging out another seed.
