Alize Cornet v Elise Mertens Head to Head

It’s 2-2 from their previous meetings. They met once this year with Mertens winning in three in Saint Petersburg. Last year, Cornet won in straight sets in their only meeting in Charleston.

Cornet Knocks Out Kudermetova

Third seed Alize Cornet prevented second seed Veronika Kudermetova from reaching a fourth final of the season as the Frenchwoman defeated the Russian in straight sets on Saturday.

Thanks to the win, Cornet will now be playing in her first final of the season. The six-time champion on the tour will be playing in the 15th final of her career. However, she hasn’t won a title since winning the Swiss Open in 2018.

Cornet, who has not dropped a set this week, needed an hour and 44 minutes to beat the World no. 12 on Saturday. After losing the first two games of the match, Cornet won five in a row to build a 5-2 lead.

Kudermetova won the next two games to send the set back on serve but Cornet broke for a third time in the very next game to seal the first set.

Cornet saved four break points in the opening game of the second set and then got the solitary break in the eighth game before closing out the match 6-4, 6-3.

The World no. 37 is now 26-22 in 2022. She began her campaign with wins over Laura Pigossi and Harriet Dart in the first two rounds respectively and then defeated Tamara Zidansek 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) in a two-hour0-and-22-minute quarterfinal. Can she end her four-year title drought on Sunday?

Mertens Powers Past Liu

Fifth seed Elise Mertens powered past Claire Liu of the United States on Saturday to reach her first singles final of the season.

The Belgian, who fell 1-3 behind after conceding a break in the fourth game, got the break back immediately and never looked in trouble again in the match. She won nine straight games to finish off the match 6-4, 6-0.

Mertens won 85% points the back of her first serve and converted 5 of 5 break points in the match.

It was a much easier outing for the World no. 42 after a tough quarterfinal where she held off a determined Moyuka Uchijima 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. She also had to bounce back from a set down to win her second round contest against Greece’s Despina Papamichail 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Mertens had begun her campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Jaqueline Cristian in the first round. She is 25-20 following the four wins in Monastir. She had reached just two singles quarterfinals this season and had lost both of them. This is her best singles performance in 2022. Can she end the week with a seventh career title from her 11th final?

Cornet v Mertens Prediction and Tip

There is little to choose between the two. Both are in the finals for the first time this year, both have won twice each in their previous four meetings and both are looking to win their seventh titles.

While Cornet has not won a final in four years, Mertens most recently won the Gippsland Trophy last year and she also won in Qatar in 2019. Plus Mertens won their most recent meeting, which was this year. So the Belgian is a slight favourite in this contest.

Tip: Mertens to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
