Davidovich-Fokina Should Get Home Crowd Support

A Monte Carlo finalist back in April,  Davidovich-Fokina showed his game was about more than clay by reaching the fourth round of the US Open for the second time in three years, and took Matteo Berrettini to five sets before eventually bowing out of the competition.

He then took a month off before returning to action at the Astana Open. However, his stay in Kazakhstan was a brief one because he was beaten in the first round by Andy Murray of the Czech Republic, the world number 103.

Like all the players he will be playing in Gijon for the first time, and it is the other end of the country from where he was brought up in Malaga.

Despite that, like all Spanish players, he can expect a warm reception from the local crowd.

Murray Accepts Wildcard

Murray has accepted a wildcard into this inaugural Gijon Open in a bid to pick up as many ranking points as possible before the end of the season in order to try and gain a favourable draw at next year’s Australian Open.

And his presence in Spain suggests that the cramping issue that has dogged him throughout the season is not as serious as once thought.

This will be the first individual tournament in which he has competed since losing in the third round of the US Open to Matteo Berrettini (the same man who would also beat Davidovich-Fokina).

Since then he has appeared in the Davis Cup for Great Britain and was part of the recent Laver Cup which saw Roger Federer bow out from competitive tennis.

Davidovich-Fokina v Murray Prediction and Tip

Much may depend on how fit Murray is going into this match. If he is in peak form he still has more than enough weapons in his armoury to beat the Spaniard. However, if he is just a little below that level, it tips the odds in favour of Davidovich-Fokina.
