Dominic Thiem v Joao Sousa Head to Head

Including a Davis Cup match 2016, there have been seven previous meetings between these two players and Thiem leads the head to head 6-1. Unfortunately, from the perspective of getting a better idea, it might not work the best given their last match-up also came in 2016 on the grass courts of Halle.

Thiem Attempts Another Run

While those days of winning titles with consummate ease are long gone for Thiem as he rebuilds from his wrist injury issues, the Austrian would want to get something under the belt for his efforts this season. Especially in more recent times.

Thiem, who started off the year with a string of seven successive first round exits, has now slowly begun to win a few matches.

It was at Bastad and Gstaad, he won five of the seven he played and followed it up with another quarterfinal appearance at Kitzbuhel. A third round appearance at the Winston-Salem Open followed soon after while he then managed to get through to the final in Rennes on the Challenger circuit.

More recently, things have cooled down a tad for Thiem who lost his first round encounter at the US Open and hasn’t been able to get past the second in Metz and Tel Aviv.

He will now kick-start another run here in Gijon as he looks to go the distance.

Sousa on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Sousa might have won a couple of Davis Cup singles matches in the last few weeks but on the ATP circuit, he is on a three-match losing streak. This includes defeats to Cameron Norrie, Stan Wawrinka and Botic van de Zandschulp.

Overall this season, the Portuguese player has a 13-19 win-loss record which has pushed his ranking down to 62nd in the world.

Last year, Sousa played all of his indoor hard court tennis on the Challenger circuit while this year, in the two indoor tournaments he has participated, he has lost in the first round.

Can he take advantage of Thiem’s recent issues or will that be a bridge too far?

Thiem v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Thiem has had his problems but will be a heavy favourite to cruise against Sousa and win in straight sets at that.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
