Cerundulo Now a Top 30 Player

Cerundulo has successfully built on the accomplishments of last year which saw him reach his first ATP final, make his Grand Slam debut and represent his country at the Tokyo Olympics.

Among his achievements this year are a maiden title win at the Swedish Open, two ATP semi-finals and his first appearance in the last four of a Masters event in Miami, back in March.

The result of all that is he has now broken into the top 30 in the world for the first time in his career.

However, the man who was given a first round bye in Gijon, has not been in the best recent form, and has not won a main tour match since Hamburg in July. That run included first round defeats at the US Open and last week in Astana, beaten by the Pole, Hubert Hurkasz.

Guinard Upsets Fognini

Guinard, who made his French Open debut earlier this year after winning a Challenger title on clay in Italy, had come through qualifying, although that was not without difficulty.

Although he beat Eduardo Esteve Lobato of Spain of Spain comfortably enough, he was made to struggle by his compatriot, Nikolas Sanchez Izquirdo, and only progressed after recovering from a set down.

That earned him a tie against the experienced Fabio Fognini, a man who has endured a difficult season. And Guinard made sure that it was another day to forget for the world number 59.

All that seemed unlikely when the odd break in three gave Fognini the first set.

But the match then was turned on its head, as Fognini’s form seemed to disappear into thin air.  He surrendered the second set without winning a game, and then Guinard broke him again in the first game of the third set, after having seen five earlier break points saved.

One game later Fognini had had enough and retired, but whether the scars were physical or entirely mental, only he will know.

Cewrundulo v Guinard Prediction and Tip
