World no. 30 Tommy Paul made a brisk start to his Gijon Open campaign as he knocked out 16-year-old tour debutant Martín Landaluce in straight sets on Tuesday.
The fifth seed was given a tough fight in the first set, but he still managed to win the set in 52 minutes. There was only one break of serve in the set and that fell to Paul in a 10-deuce fourth game.
With the first set in the bag, Paul raced past the Spanish wild card in the second. He dropped just two points on his serve and seven on return to take the set in 29 minutes and seal a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Paul didn’t face a single break point in the match and won 85% points on his first delivery.
The 25-year-old, who won the Stockholm Open title last year, is 34-23 this season. His best this year was a semifinal finish in Delray Beach. He has also been a quarterfinalist in seven other tournaments, namely Adelaide-1 and 2, Acapulco, Queen’s Eastbourne, Atlanta and Montreal. Overall he is 22-12 on hard courts. Alvarez Varona Wins Battle of Qualifiers
Local hope Nicolas Alvarez Varona came back from a set down to defeat fellow qualifier Marco Trungelliti in the first round and register his first ever tour-level victory.
Alvarez Varona was outplayed in the first set by the Argentine but he made a resounding come back over the next two sets to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 46 minutes.
Ranked no. 231, the 21-year-old Spaniard converted 4 of 5 break points and saved 6 of 8 to advance to the next round.
Alvarez Varona, who made his debut in Barcelona this year, improved his season record to 21-28 across levels.
He had beaten fellow Spaniard Oriol Roca Batalla 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Giustino 6-2, 6-2 in the second qualifying round. Can he upset Paul in the second round?
