Giron Rebounds to Beat Ramos-Vinolas
The United States’ Marcos Giron rebounded from a set down to beat Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round on Tuesday.
Giron had broken in the very first game of the match, but the Spaniard came back, drawing level with a break in the sixth game and then he took the set by breaking for a second time in the final game.
The American also started the second set well, breaking Ramos-Vinolas twice and building a 4-1 lead. The Spaniard got a break back but couldn’t get the other one back as Giron tied the match at one-set apiece. In the final set, bth players held serve over the first four games, but it was Giron, who ran away with the match by winning the last five games in a row.
Giron won the two-hour-and-four-minute contest 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. He came into the tournament in good form. He had reached his maiden ATP finals in his previous tournament in San Diego, but couldn’t win the title after falling to Brandon Nakashima.
While he struggled on clay and to some extend on grass courts, a 15-14 record on hard courts has given his season record some respectability. He was also a semifinalist in Dallas and a quarterfinalist in Acapulco earlier this year. Can the world no. 62 reach a fifth quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday?

Thiem Off to Flying Start
Dominic Thiem got off to a flying start in Giron, as the Austrian handed the Portuguese a straight sets drubbing in the opening round.
The Austrian didn’t face a single break point in the match as he breezed past the world no. 64, 6-2, 6-0 in just an hour and two minutes.
Thiem converted 5 of 7 break points and won 70% of total points (53 of 76) to cruise into the second round. The 29-year-old improved to 12-13 on the tour in 2022. Overall he is 17-16 from all competitions and that includes a runner-up finish at the Rennes Challenger last month.
Currently ranked no. 165, the former no. 3 started the season late and after a subdued start he finally ended the clay season brightly reaching one semifinal and finishing as a quarterfinalist in two of them.
He looked in fine form in the Gijon opener, can he keep it going in the next round.
Giron v Thiem Prediction and Tip
This is going to be a good contest. Giron’s recent form has been good and the first round win would have given him more confidence. Thiem too will be very happy with the start he got. More than the win it’s the manner in which he defeated the World no. 64 mattered a lot. He is looking dangerous and can beat another top 100 player on Wednesday.
Tip: Thiem to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
