What Happened at the 2022 Guadalajara Open?
This will be the second edition of the Guadalajara Open as a part of the WTA 1000 series.
In the first edition of this tournament played in 2022, it was American star Jessica Pegula who pulled away from the pack by winning the title. She defeated Maria Sakkari in the final, winning 6-3, 6-2.
Pegula, who had started off as the third seed, started off with a rather difficult win over Elena Rybakina in the second round following an opening bye. She then routed Bianca Andreescu, Sloane Stephens and Victoria Azarenka to make it to the final.
Top seeded Paula Badosa was knocked out in the second round against Victoria Azarenka following an injury issue, while the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka also fell at the same stage to Liudmilla Samsonova.
There is another WTA tournament played in Guadalajara which was first held in 2019 as a WTA 125 tournament, following which it was upgraded to WTA 250 in 2021.
Veronika Kudermetova had won the competition in 2019, while in 2020 the tournament was cancelled because of the pandemic.
In 2021, Sara Sorribes Tormo overcame Eugenie Bouchard in the final to win the title, while Sloane Stephens defeated Marie Bouzkova to pocket the 2022 title.
