Sonego’s Troubles Post-Metz

Lorenzo Sonego looked much like his old self at the start of this indoor stretch. The Italian is a very polarizing player who is capable of producing near-top 10 level when he plays his best. It’s just unfortunate that he rarely produces that kind of tennis.

His indoor play has not been far off as he currently has a 6-2 record with a trophy from Metz as well. Since then it’s been rather poor overall as his stay in Sofia was rather short after a long week in Metz. His next two events have been rather bad as well with consecutive round-one exits in Florence and Napoli.

Neither of those opponents has looked too formidable so it’s his tennis that is betraying him at the moment. It won’t get easier against Ruusuvuori but he’ll need to be at his best.

The serve will need to be there and if it isn’t it’s going to be a major problem.

Ruusuvuori In Form

Emil Ruusuvuori has picked up some impressive wins in Stockholm last week. He did lose easily to Stefanos Tsitsipas but that is the nature of his tennis. Very inconsistent and up and down as you never know what to expect from him.

Generally speaking, he’s a very good indoor player due to his powerful serve and affinity to play really strong from the baseline. 6-4 is the record so far and that’s fair with his overall record being 41-31. How he does in this match will largely depend on what version of himself shows up.

If he shows up with good serving and spectacular baseline groundstrokes he should have enough to defeat Sonego as they are somewhere in the same ballpark talent-wise.

It’s just the inconsistencies in both players that make it hard to predict.

Sonego v Ruusuvori Prediction and Tip

This is really tough to predict as you never know what you’re going to get from either. Sonego looked far worse last week but he can also turn it up pretty quickly. I’d lean toward Ruusuvuori but it’s a very risky bet.
