Taylor Fritz came to Vienna to win the trophy and while that’s not him being overly confident but rather a necessity. The American is battling for a spot in Turin and he needs points with this event and Paris his last chance of gaining a huge amount of points.
It’s going to be very tough as he plays Nishioka in round one, a player who has had a huge upswing this year and is ranked inside the top 50. To make things worse he’s also playing really well at the moment and played two solid matches to get into the main draw.
He’s also beaten Fritz three times before with one of those matches coming this year as well. Fritz will need to be on high alert but the last time he played was in Tokyo and he ended up winning that event. He can do it here again but this will be a tricky match.

Nishioka Keeps Playing Well
Yoshihito Nishioka keeps playing well and he won two matches in the qualifiers to get into the main draw. They were tricky matches but he passed the test fairly comfortably with some superbly consistent play from the baseline. Nishioka finally got things together this year and he’s looking very strong.
He’ll be fairly confident against Fritz as he never lost against him before and they played more than once. It was three times and one of those times was this year in Acapulco and Nishioka won that match in three sets. He could certainly pull off something similar here as I do think it will be pretty close.
He will have to be really strong on serve and hold it as Fritz will attack every slower ball. On return, he’ll have to force Fritz to overhit as the American has far more power in his game. So far it worked for him and whether he can do it again remains to be seen.
Fritz v Nishioka Prediction and Tip
This one is very hard to predict. Fritz has more pressure to win the match and I think he will but the over seems like better value overall.
