Coric Survives Another Three-Setter

Winning three-setters have become a habit for Borna Coric as the Croatian won a third straight three-set contest in the tournament on Friday to move into the semifinals.

The world no. 27 produced another determined effort on Friday as he fended off fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 54 minutes.

Coric capitalised on the only breaking opportunity he had in the match, to take the first set. There were no more breaks of serve in the contest with the next two sets being decided in the tiebreaks. In fact Hurkacz, held a break point in the second set and three in the third but the Croatian denied him on all four occasions.

Coric withstood 28 aces and 58 winners from the world no. 11 and also won two less points than Hurkacz’s 107, but he won the crucial moments of the match to emerge victorious.

In the first two rounds, Coric had come back from a set down to beat Quentin Halys in the first round and second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third.

He is now a win away from reaching a ninth final. After poor form, injury and surgery saw him struggle over the last two years, Coric has made a solid comeback this season. His biggest success came in Cincinnati where he won his first ATP 1000 title. He will be looking to reach a second final of the season on Saturday, which will be the ninth career final for the three-time tour-level champion.

Shapovalov v Coric Prediction and Tip

Given the quality of players that Coric has beaten over the last two matches and the manner he has won those dramatic contests, he will go into the semifinal with a lot of confidence and will hold the edge over the higher-ranked Shapovalov.
