Iga Swiatek v Coco Gauff Head to Head

Gauff is yet to win a set against the Pole.

Swiatek Cruises Past Garcia

With two easy wins in the first two round robin matches, Iga Swiatek became the first player from the Tracy Austin group to book a place in the semifinals of the eight-player WTA Finals in Fort Worth, United States.

Swiatek, who scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the first match, needed an hour and 25 minutes to beat sixth seed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2 in the second match on Thursday.

The world no. 1 wasn’t broken by the Russian in the opening match, but she lost serve in the third game of the first set against Garcia. However, she responded immediately with a break and then never looked back in the contest, breaking Garcia one more time in the first set and twice in the second to get her second win.

Swiatek is 66-8 for the season and 16-1 since the start of the U.S. Open. She reached three consecutive finals, winning the title at the U.S. Open, finishing runner-up in Ostrava and winning again in San Diego.

Overall, the 11-time tour-level winner has won eight titles from nine finals this year, which includes two Grand Slam titles at the French and the U.S. Opens and four WTA 1000t titles in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome.

She will be looking to cap the brilliant season with the season-ending title.

Gauff Out of Contention

While Swiatek advanced to the semifinals, Coco Gauff’s hopes of progressing into the semifinals ended with two defeats in the first two matches.

Gauff went down to Caroline Garcia 4-6, 3-6 in the first match and then she lost her second match to Daria Kasatkina 6-7 (6-8), 3-6 in an hour and 40 minute contest on Thursday.

The first set was an engrossing one with both players breaking each other three times each and forcing the tiebreak. In the tiebreak, too, both players got four minibreaks each over the first 10 points, but it was Kasatkina, who got the decisive minibreak to go up 7-6 and then closed out the set by winning the next point.

The second set, too, saw plenty of breaks, with both payers breaking each other twice each in the first five games. However, it was the Russian who broke for a third time in the set before going on to clinch the contest.

The loss ended Gauff’s hopes of progressing in the tournament and now she will be playing her final match of the season on Saturday against Swiatek.

It has been a terrific season for the 18-year-old, who reached her maiden Grand slam final at the French Open. Can she cap it off with a win?
